DVLA Number Plates
What are private registrations?
A private (personalised) registration is a vehicle mark you buy for its letters and numbers rather than its age. You buy the entitlement to assign it to a vehicle you own — the DVLA keeps the official register, and the mark stays yours to move between cars.
How DVLA registration numbers work
Current marks read AB05 ABC: two letters for the region, two digits for the age (05 = March–August 2005), then three random letters. Prefix marks (A1 ABC) run letter-and-age first; suffix marks (ABC 1A) put the age letter last; dateless marks have no age at all, which is why they suit any vehicle.
Important checks before purchase
- • Vehicle age rule — a mark can never make a vehicle look newer than it is.
- • The £80 DVLA fee — compulsory on every assignment; it's inside our all-inclusive prices.
- • Paperwork — you'll need your V5C details; we handle the rest.
